The big thing is be a practitioner.
I'm a firm believer that in order to lead you need to know the subject material. You need to have been there, and have developed empathy for the difficulties, and the rewards and the challenges that come through doing data science.
So if you're currently in a software role, or in a technical role, there's lots of ways to build that expertise on the side, or as you're doing your work.
Whether it's through using Google Analytics in a cool way that you haven't done before, or taking a class online, or all these data science bootcamp kinds of things.
I think that's important, to have that sort of foundation for a while, and then once you develop that empathy, then I think it's much easier to be a collaborative leader.
